Juliette Chrétien, born in Zurich in 1986 during a snowstorm, is a photographer and artist based in Zurich. Shaped by both an urban upbringing and long-standing experiences in alpine regions, she focuses on the connections that exist between different actors and forms of life. Her radically loving gaze is directed toward interspecies relationships. Between humans and the more-than-human like animals, stones, plants, spaces, and the elements. Her work invites intimacy and opens space for individual perception.
Rooted in photography, her practice increasingly expands into literary, collaborative, and socially engaged projects. Through her work, she addresses themes such as human trafficking, borders, value systems, and public space. Her long-term project Kiesel Kiesel Kiesel (2015–2025) questions the Western hierarchy of species and examines the relationships between human and more-than-human entities. Projects such as Kunst gegen Frauenhandel (2011/2012) and Consider Yourself Invited at the Belluard Festival (2015) exemplify her engagement with socio-political questions and collective participation. Her ongoing project Phoenix TV (2025–) explores an ecosystemic approach examining how ecological awareness can be embedded within daily practices and shared rituals.
Her interdisciplinary practice is informed by a feminist perspective and seeks to make visible what often remains unseen in everyday life. Alongside her artistic work, she undertakes commissioned photography and has held guest lectureships at F+F School of Art and Design and at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB).
